I ran into a problem with the website. Who do I contact?
Contact the web manager, Jane Fasullo, at [email protected].
What is the SCMTA?
The SCMTA is the professional organization for Suffolk County Math Teachers of all levels (elementary to college), math related professionals, and interested parties.
It was begun under the umbrella of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics more than 35 years ago.
Since then, most of the teacher and student activities and services that were offered have become obsolete or unattainable as the ability and desire of people working in math education to take part in such activities has decreased.
The Suffolk county teachers conference, which had many books on display and speakers relating successes with course offerings and teaching materials, ceased to draw a large enough audience in the late 1990's so it was abandoned.
The supervisor's luncheon was terminated in the early 2000's when it failed to attract enough supervisors, probably because supervisor positions were disappearing and the demands on the time of the few that remained increased.
And because teachers now are only rarely permitted to take students out of school and funding for trips has dried up, student out-of-school events have been severely curtailed or ceased altogether. For example, the elementary student symposium, a one day event for students to learning non-traditional math related things, failed to attract enough teacher presenters or student attendees to keep it going.
In spite of these changes, the organization maintains a number of student activities, most notably the competitions.
Who can join the SCMTA?
Anyone can join the SCMTA but most members are related to teaching or school administration in some way.
Historically, the board of directors had 18 members of which at least one third were school administrators. Now, there is only one administrator in the 5 member board.
Where is the SCMTA office located?
There is no SCMTA office. All the work is done by volunteers who are based in their homes.
I found the application for the event I want to register for but it is out of date. What do I do?
There are times when applications are not up to date. We apologize for that but it happens.
When you run into this problem, contact Jane, the web manager and she will send you the most up to date application she can get. Some times, the activity manager has not yet created an up to date version so you'd have to wait a few days while we get things ready for you.
